You Are What You Eat: Guarding Your Mind Against Spiritual Junk Food

September 02, 20244 min read

Have you ever heard the saying, “You are what you eat”? While it’s usually about physical health, it also applies to your mind and spirit. Just as the food you consume affects your body, the thoughts, ideas, and influences you allow into your mind shape who you become spiritually, emotionally, and mentally.

In today’s fast-paced world, we are constantly bombarded with information. Social media, TV shows, music, books, and conversations—all contribute to what our minds consume. But just like there are different types of food, there are different kinds of mental and spiritual content. Some are nourishing, others are neutral, and some are downright toxic.

The Battle for Your Mind

The Bible warns us about the battlefield of the mind. Satan knows your potential—perhaps even better than you do. His goal is to frustrate, deceive, and ultimately derail you from reaching your God-given destiny. The mind is the primary battleground where this spiritual warfare takes place. Whatever captures your mind captures you.

The Scriptures provide vivid descriptions of what can happen to our minds when they are not protected:

  • Confused, frustrated, destroyed (Deut 28:20)

  • Closed (Job 17:4)

  • Hostile toward God (Rom 8:7)

  • Anxious and restless (Eccl 2:21-23)

  • Fearful (Isaiah 32:4)

  • Dismayed, troubled (Isaiah 41:10)

  • Dull (2 Cor 3:14)

  • Blinded (2 Cor 4:4)

  • Depraved, corrupt (2 Tim 3:8)

These verses highlight the dangers of letting our minds become vulnerable to negative influences. All sin starts with a lie—a deception that we allow to take root in our thoughts. Jesus identified Satan as “the father of lies” (John 8:44), and it’s his strategy to implant these lies in our minds.

Guarding Your Mind: The Strategic Campaign

The Apostle Paul understood the importance of guarding the mind. In 2 Corinthians 10:4-5, he teaches about the spiritual warfare we must engage in to protect our thoughts. The Greek word for “warfare” in this passage, strateia, refers to a strategic campaign. This isn’t a haphazard battle; it’s a well-planned attack by Satan against the knowledge of God. Our response should be equally strategic.

Paul also uses the term aichmalotizo to describe taking thoughts captive. This isn’t a passive action; it’s an aggressive binding, as if capturing a prisoner of war. We must be purposeful and forceful in guarding our minds against harmful influences.

You Are What You Eat: Mental and Spiritual Diet

So, how do we guard our minds? It begins with understanding the types of “food” we are feeding our minds:

  1. Superfoods for the Mind: Just as superfoods are rich in nutrients and beneficial to our health, there are superfoods for our minds and spirits. These include reading the Bible, engaging in worship, and studying theological works that draw us closer to God. These are the things that nourish our spirit and strengthen our relationship with God.

  2. Junk Food for the Mind: Junk food is high in calories and low in nutritional value. Similarly, there are things we consume mentally that may be enjoyable but offer little spiritual benefit. These include certain TV shows, books, and activities that aren’t necessarily harmful but don’t add value to our spiritual growth.

  3. Toxic Food for the Mind: Toxic foods are not only devoid of nutrients but can be harmful, even deadly, in large quantities. Spiritually, this refers to content that draws us away from God, consumes our time, and leads us into sin. These are the things we must actively avoid, as they can poison our minds and hearts.

The Power of Self-Awareness

One of the most crucial aspects of guarding your mind is self-awareness. Ask yourself: Why am I drawn to what I’m drawn to? Why do I prefer certain movies, music, or activities? Understanding the “why” behind your choices can help you identify patterns and make healthier decisions for your mind and spirit.

The Bible offers wisdom on this in Psalm 101:3, where the Psalmist says, “I will not set before my eyes anything that is worthless.” This verse challenges us to be mindful of what we allow into our minds. It’s not just about avoiding toxic content but also about filling our minds with what is valuable, edifying, and true.

Conclusion: Choosing a Healthy Mind Diet

Protecting your mind is not a one-time decision; it’s a daily commitment. Just as you would choose a healthy diet to maintain your physical health, you must choose a healthy mental and spiritual diet to maintain your spiritual well-being. Be intentional about what you consume mentally and spiritually. Remember, you are what you eat—so feed your mind and spirit with what will lead you closer to God and His purpose for your life.

You're Welcome Here

Augusta Church wants to help you become the person God made you to be. No matter where you are in your journey, you’re invited to discover your purpose and live it out at Augusta Church. It’s our prayer that you feel loved and welcome just as you are the moment you walk in our doors.

Kids Ministry

Augusta Kids is all about raising up the next generation to become sons and daughters of God. We are passionate about helping children identify their strengths and their call at the youngest age possible. We desire to guide them in their relationship with God and to prepare them for the power and presence of God and His glory. We aim to teach children about who God made them to be and to embrace a biblical perspective of their life and purpose. We work to help our kids become the next supernatural generation who engage in a church where they can help bring people into freedom by healing the sick, casting out demons, feeding the hungry, and taking care of the impoverished. We look forward to helping parents raise up a generation of spiritual warriors. We don't believe children have to wait for their calling to be enacted - we don't babysit we are called to equip.

Need Prayer?

There are times when life is overwhelming, when all we have is questions. In those moments, hope can feel far away. The great thing about prayer is that it shifts our perspective towards the One who stands ready to listen. No matter what you're facing, we'd love to pray with you!
