Call of Christmas Part 3- Jospeh

December 16, 20244 min read

The story of Joseph, the earthly father of Jesus, is often overshadowed by the miraculous events surrounding Christ’s birth. Yet, Joseph's journey provides profound insights into what it means to protect a calling, even when it isn’t directly ours. His life reminds us that God’s purpose often requires sacrifice, teamwork, and faith beyond human understanding.

Called Without a Choice

Unlike Zechariah and Elizabeth, who prayed and waited for their miracle, Joseph didn’t get a choice in his role. He wasn’t consulted, prepared, or even forewarned. Mary was told by the angel Gabriel that she would bear the Son of God, but Joseph found out the news after Mary was already pregnant. As Matthew 1:18 tells us, Mary “was found to be with child.” It’s likely someone else noticed before Joseph did, leaving him to deal with the public implications of her pregnancy.

At first, Joseph’s response was entirely human—he considered walking away. He planned to divorce Mary quietly, but God intervened through an angelic dream. Joseph was given clarity about the situation, reassurance about Mary’s faithfulness, and insight into Jesus' divine mission. This was no ordinary child; this was Immanuel, "God with us."

A Team Effort for a Big Call

What strikes me about Joseph's story is how his calling wasn’t just about him—it was a partnership. God called Mary to carry Jesus, but Joseph was entrusted to care for both mother and child. This dynamic shows us that some callings are so big they require a team to carry them out.

Joseph’s role teaches us that no one part of the call is greater than another. Mary carried the physical burden of pregnancy, while Joseph provided protection and provision. Together, they fulfilled God's plan. Similarly, the story of Jesus’ birth highlights a larger community of people—shepherds, wise men, and even outsiders like the Magi—coming together to celebrate and carry out the good news of Christ.

Opposition and Sacrifice

Walking out a God-given call isn’t easy. For Joseph, saying yes to God meant enduring public ridicule. Taking Mary as his wife while she was already pregnant would have caused whispers and judgment from their community. Beyond the shame, Joseph had to set aside his own dreams and rights.

As a carpenter from Bethlehem, Joseph wasn’t wealthy. Yet, he committed to providing for a child that wasn’t biologically his. He sacrificed personal comfort, reputation, and even his wedding-night expectations to obey God.

The bigger the call, the greater the sacrifice. Joseph’s story reminds us that obedience to God often comes with a cost, but it’s always worth it.

Healing and Clarity in the Call

Joseph’s initial reaction to Mary’s pregnancy—planning to leave quietly—reflects a natural response to pain. He likely felt betrayed and confused. But God met him in that moment with healing and clarity through the angel’s message.

The angel not only explained Mary’s miraculous conception but also pointed Joseph to scripture. God always backs His calling with His Word. The angel’s message was a reminder that Joseph’s role was part of a much larger story—a fulfillment of prophecy about the Messiah who would save His people.

God’s clarity allowed Joseph to embrace his calling with confidence. He immediately took Mary as his wife, fully stepping into the ridicule, responsibility, and sacrifice that came with his role.

Walking the Call Together

Joseph’s story reveals another powerful truth: the call of God is never meant to be walked out alone. While the vision may come to one person, its fulfillment often requires a community.

Even Jesus’ earthly ministry reflected this principle. God surrounded Him with disciples, followers, and supporters from all walks of life. Similarly, when God calls us to something, He will often bring others alongside us—some close, like Joseph was to Mary, and others who play supporting roles, like the shepherds and wise men.

It’s also important to recognize that opposition often accompanies a big vision. As I recently learned in a discussion about casting vision, one indicator that a calling is from God is when it faces opposition. Joseph and Mary faced ridicule and misunderstanding from their community, but they remained faithful to the call.

Final Thoughts

Joseph’s story is a reminder that God’s calling on our lives often demands faith, humility, and sacrifice. It may require us to give up personal rights, endure misunderstanding, and walk alongside others whose callings intertwine with ours.

But just as God gave Joseph clarity and strength to fulfill his role, He will provide for us. His Word will guide us, His Spirit will strengthen us, and His purpose will prevail.

When God calls, the journey may not be easy, but like Joseph, we can trust that it’s part of a much bigger plan—one that brings glory to God and transforms lives for eternity.

So, if you’re protecting a calling that feels overwhelming or not entirely your own, take heart. God is with you, just as He was with Joseph.

You're Welcome Here

Augusta Church wants to help you become the person God made you to be. No matter where you are in your journey, you’re invited to discover your purpose and live it out at Augusta Church. It’s our prayer that you feel loved and welcome just as you are the moment you walk in our doors.

Kids Ministry

Augusta Kids is all about raising up the next generation to become sons and daughters of God. We are passionate about helping children identify their strengths and their call at the youngest age possible. We desire to guide them in their relationship with God and to prepare them for the power and presence of God and His glory. We aim to teach children about who God made them to be and to embrace a biblical perspective of their life and purpose. We work to help our kids become the next supernatural generation who engage in a church where they can help bring people into freedom by healing the sick, casting out demons, feeding the hungry, and taking care of the impoverished. We look forward to helping parents raise up a generation of spiritual warriors. We don't believe children have to wait for their calling to be enacted - we don't babysit we are called to equip.

Need Prayer?

There are times when life is overwhelming, when all we have is questions. In those moments, hope can feel far away. The great thing about prayer is that it shifts our perspective towards the One who stands ready to listen. No matter what you're facing, we'd love to pray with you!
